Snowkiting Hardangervidda - The Season of 2025 So Far
Snow - not the deepest amount of snow, but..
The season of 2025 has not given us the deepest amounts of powder and snow so far, with still some hopes of more snowfalls through march and april. The snowpack this season has been thinner than we normally experience. Even though we could need more snow in different parts of the terrain, the frozen lakes and flat terrain have had a perfect amount of snow to have fun for beginners and for people taking snowkite courses.
Around in the terrain still a lot of rocks are not covered in snow, and mountaintops lack a good pack of snow, due to wind blowing away the new snow every time snow has been falling.
Wind - No lack of the good stuff
The wind season of 2025 has been as good as it always is, and is supposed to be. Very few days with no wind to find (if you know where to go, you will find wind), and some extremely strong days of winds where gusts were up towards 32m/s for several days during some of the storms that have passed. The upcoming weeks look like the weather should be more stable, less storms and rough wind, but still good conditions!
Weather - Some long periods of great weather, and some warmer periods
This season has had bigger variations in temperature than what we experienced in 2024. There has already been several periods of warm and moist days where temperatures have gone above 0 degrees, delivering rain. Warm periods tend to give us worse snow conditions, with harder snowpacks and less powder after snow has been melting and shifting to colder weather where the snowpack hardens again. But to focus on some positives, the snow pack is now stable and sure to hold for a while, especially in the flat areas where most of the snow has managed to stay and not blow away. We have also had some extremely nice periods of high pressure systems over the mountains delivering sun and light winds perfect for bigger kite sizes and foil kites. The high pressures also often give extreme cold temperatures going below -20 degrees celcius, so be prepared for some cold when coming to the mountains!
How will the rest of the season be?
Early to say, but with a thinner snowpack than normal now, the chances for a long season, are marginal. We hope for some big snowfalls during the rest of march and april without too much wind so the snow can stick to the ground! Lets hope for more snow!
See you in the mountains!
